DescriptionThis course examines how NGO's and humanitarian projects are impacting the lives of people across the globe. Who are the actors and interests driving the surge in international humanitarianism? How do humanitarian capital flows influence global politics? Do rock stars and movie celebrities engaging in humanitarian work really make any difference? ... Students will examine the rise of NGO's as political, economic, and social actors in the context of an increasingly globalized, neoliberal world. This course examines key issues including: · the ethical considerations of humanitarian assistance · the politics of "development," & international aid money · the influence of celebrity humanitarianism · the power of social & digital media · the impact of humanitarian projects on local cultural contexts and processes. Students will leave this course with a better understanding of the complex webs of NGO interventions across the world and will also cultivate a critical awareness of the politics and possibilities for humanitarian partnerships.

DescriptionAt a time of intensifying social anxiety over climate and social change, people are seeking ways to understand our relationship to our environment. Although scientific analyses dominate the climate crisis discourse in the media, spiritual responses to the environment have a strong tradition and offer a way for students to connect to their local communities and ecologies. This course explores the climate crisis through the lenses of ecology and religion, including Judeo-Christian eco-theologies, Asian cosmologies, and Indigenous spiritualities.
