In this course students are given an overview of trauma and interpersonal violence throughout the lifespan, as well as the populations that are most at risk. Students will acquire knowledge of theoretical and practice approaches to working with individuals impacted by truam and/or violence. Emphasis will be given to neurophysiology of trauma, those who commit violent acts as well as those who are impacted by it. Students will engage in critical analysis of social systems and how they may perpetuate feelings of threat or invite opportunities for safety. This course will also contain an ongoing emphasis on self-care principles and practices, since vicarious trauma commonly impacts those engaged in trauma-oriented and anti-violence work. |
