What is it about King's that draws so many high-performing athletes?
If you ask the student-athletes, it’s the support they get from the faculty, staff, and King’s as a whole.
For two years in a row, King's student-athletes Shona Branton (women's swimming) and Treye Trotman (men's wrestling) earned the Female and Male Athlete of the Year Awards at the annual Mustangs awards. At the most recent Mustangs Honours Breakfast, 28 King’s students were recognized as Mustang Scholars. Approximately 75 players on the current Western Mustangs football team are King's student-athletes.
“[King’s faculty] are extremely helpful with setting you up for success and making sure that [your academic schedule] works with your athletic schedule as well.”
– Riley Mathieson, Mustangs men's golf team member and King's student
King’s is home to more than 150 student-athletes in a variety of varsity sports and teams. As with other Western resources and services, King’s students can participate in Western sports, and they’re valued and celebrated members of Western Mustang teams.

King's has a men's basketball team as part of our associate membership in Ontario Collegiate Recreation (OCR). The men’s basketball team usually plays in eight to 10 tournaments per year in Canada and the US. In the 2024-25 season, the team won two silver medals, a bronze and a fourth-place finish across four Canadian tournaments, and made waves in tournaments south of the border as well. Learn more about becoming a member of this winning team.
As with other Western resources, you can play on Western intramural teams, which include 20 sports at a competitive or recreational level.
