English Proficiency

Students admitted to King's University College must be proficient in written and spoken English. If English is not your first language, you must provide proof of your proficiency in listening to, speaking, writing and reading English. Typically, this is done through an official test or ESL program. We reserve the right to ask you to provide proof of English language proficiency. King’s requires one of the following:

  • Language Tests

  • Academic English Programs

  • Exemptions

Duolingo

Minimum overall score: 115
No subscore less than: 100

C.A.E.L. (Canadian Academic English Language Assessment)

Academic English Programs

If you do not meet King’s English language requirement but are otherwise academically admissible, you will automatically be admitted into an academic English program such as the English Boost Program.

English Boost Program (Boost)

The Boost Program is for students who are close to meeting the language proficiency requirements for direct entry to King’s. Boost is a nine-week program you will complete in the summer before you start at King's.

Students who complete the Fanshawe ESL program fulfil all English language requirements for admission to King’s.

ICEAP

King’s University College accepts successful completion of Level 7 of the King’s University College/ICEAP Toronto Bridging Program as an alternative to the English language proficiency requirement for international students.

Please note that fees may be modified at any time. 

Proficiency Test Exemptions

One of these statements must be true:

  • I attended four full-time years of secondary school in English.
  • I attended two full-time years at an Ontario college in English.
  • I attended one full-time year of university in English.
  • I completed an AP English exam with a score of 4 or higher.
  • I completed an IB English HL (A1 or A2).
  • I completed an IB English SL with a predicted or final score of 4 or higher.
  • I completed a GCE AS (Advanced Subsidiary) or A Level (Advanced Level) English* with a minimum predicted or final grade of A.
  • I completed an IGCSE O Level (Ordinary Level) English* with a minimum final grade of A.

*Note: IGCSE and GCE English as an Additional Language are not accepted.

All of the following must also be true:

  • My classes were taught in English.
  • I took academic courses.
  • I did not take English as a second language course(s).
  • I took grade 12 English (if your high school was in Canada).
