Each year, King's provides awards in each academic discipline in which a degree is offered at King’s to full-time students currently registered in Year IV in an Honours Specialization or Honours Double Major with the highest average in the senior courses in their discipline.

A medal is awarded annually in June to the student graduating with the highest average in the last year of the program in order to recognize outstanding academic achievement. Only one gold medal per student will be awarded. This award is made possible by the generosity of Dawn, Nonie '84 and Keith Brennan, in honour of their stepmother Dr. Linda Spano, a Family Physician who recognized and valued the importance of Social Work, and a member of the King's University College Board during the 1980s. This award is granted annually to a full-time or part-time student who is studying in the Bachelor of Social Work or Masters of Social Work program. The successful student applicant must demonstrate financial need and have a minimum 75% average in the previous Fall/Winter term. This award is made possible by the generosity of Lino and Carol Canzona and in honour of Lino's mother, Elisa Canzona. Dr. Lino Canzona was a beloved professor and scholar at King's from 1970-1995 and played a key role in forming the School of Social Work at the University. Lino and Carol both recognized and values the importance of Social Work, giving back to your community, and helping all who are disadvantaged, including women and children. This award is open to both International and Canadian King's students, and granted annually to a full-time or part-time student in the Bachelor of Social Work or Masters of Social Work program. The successful student applicant will have demonstrated a commitment to volunteerism as a way of being, through the gift of their time and expertise to one or more organizations. Each candidate must submit a short paragraph of not more than 250 words outlining the positive impact they have made in their community through their social work-related activities, such as assisting vulnerable populations, or advocating for social change. Preference will be given to candidates that include volunteer hours and contact name and number for supervisor at the organization where they volunteered. The successful recipient may hold this award with other student awards.

This award has been established by the Kennedy Family to support a Master of Social Work student at King’s enrolled in the MSW program with an interest in mental health. Preference will be given to students studying eating disorders. The student must demonstrate financial need. The recipient may be required to accept a field placement assignment in a setting in which social work practice relates to the concerns of those experiencing mental illness and will be expected to study some aspect of mental health through the Advanced Practicum. The successful recipient may hold this award with other student awards.

This award is granted annually to an international or domestic student entering, or continuing, full-time or part-time study at King's in the School of Social Work. Preference will be given to MSW students who identify as a member of the Black community, First Nations, Metis or Inuit, or a person of Colour. King’s values diversity and equity in our student body, and has designed this award to address historical and contemporary injustices that have created barriers to higher education for these members. The award will be presented annually based on academic achievement and demonstrated financial need. The financial need may relate to direct educational costs and/or living costs. The successful recipient may hold this award with other student awards. Each candidate must submit the following: 1. A completed application, and 2. A short paragraph of not more than 250 words outlining the path that brought them to King’s, and what they hope to achieve after graduation.

The Heather Fraleigh MacLean Meek Memorial Social Work Award$1,000.001ContinuingNo

Established by her family in loving memory of Heather MacLean Meek, a King’s BSW graduate and a social worker who practiced in the London community. The award is given annually to MSW student entering the final year of the two-year MSW program who has maintained a minimum overall academic average of 75% in MSW courses and demonstrates a strong potential for leadership in the social work profession. In the case that the two-year MSW program is not available, students enrolled in the one-year MSW course will be considered. Students will be nominated by a faculty members from the School of Social Work. A student may solicit the support of a faculty member from the School of Social Work regarding a nomination. The Selection Committee will be composed of one School of Social Work representative, one community representative, and the School's Graduate Program.

Award Criteria

The award is given annually to MSW student entering the final year of the two-year MSW program who has maintained a minimum overall academic average of 75% in MSW courses and demonstrates a strong potential for leadership in the social work profession.; In the case that the two-year MSW program is not available, students enrolled in the one-year MSW course will be considered.; Students will be nominated by a faculty members from the School of Social Work. The recipient must demonstrate a keen interest in Social Policy and Social Welfare, as well as a committed interest in the values and attitudes underlying the profession of Social Work.
