Purpose and Scope

The Work Study program offers students the opportunity to work flexible hours on campus in jobs that accommodate their schedules. The main objective of the Work Study program is to provide a regular source of income to students in financial need, lessening their overall debt load. The program also offers students valuable job training and experience that will contribute to their skill set for their eventual entrance into the workforce.  Financial need is determined in a manner similar to the Canada and Ontario Student Loans Assessment.  It involves assessing a student's program costs and living costs in comparison to the resources available to them.

Students are able to work up to 15 hours per week, to a maximum of $2,800.00. The current hourly rate of pay is $16.55. 

To be considered for the work study program students must meet the following eligibility criteria.

Eligibility
  • Must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident. 
  • Must be registered at King's University College as an undergraduate student in a minimum 60% course load (40% course load for students with disabilities) for the Fall/Winter, September - April study period. King’s students are not eligible for positions at main campus for fall/winter academic term. 
  • Must demonstrate financial need in one of the following ways: 
    1. OSAP funding recipient with unmet need through OSAP;  
    2. If not an Ontario resident, have applied to their provincial loan system and are receiving funding and have unmet need;
    3. If not eligible for the items above, have other educational debt. For example, a balance on a student line of credit in students name. 
  • Must maintain a minimum of a C average (60%) in previous Fall/Winter term. 

Meeting the eligibility requirements is not a guarantee of employment. Students approved to participate in the program will be competing with other students to receive an offer of employment from one of the positions listed. 

How to Apply

1. Submit your application starting August 1.

  • Access application here.
  • Complete and submit application online. 
  • You will receive notice by e-mail if you meet all the requirements of the program.  Please note:  Due to the high volumes in the Student Financial Services Office, it may take 3 or 4 weeks to process your application.

2. Find a job

  • If your application is approved, you will be given a username and password to access the site and view the available positions.
  • You will have to apply for available positions and arrange an interview.
  • If you do not obtain a position, and submit a completed contract within two weeks, your application will be cancelled, and your funds will be allocated to another student.

3. Arrange your contract

  • If you are offered a position, you must complete the online contract and have your supervisor approve it.
  • When completing the online contract, you will be asked to provide the following to payroll BEFORE you begin working:
    • Your completed contract
    • Completed tax forms which will be sent to you by email
    • A void cheque or Direct Deposit Form for your mandatory direct deposit payroll.
    • Your Social Insurance Card

4. Start Work

 

 

  • Before you can begin working you must have completed the previous steps.
  • You must advise Student Financial Services, in writing, of any changes to your course load and/or financial situation.
  • Time sheets must be submitted every Monday by noon, by you/your supervisor, to the Payroll Office, to avoid lapses in your payroll deposit.

Policy Information

Students working under the Ontario Work Study Plan are classified as part-time employees of King’s University College and will receive a T-4 slip. These positions carry with them all the responsibilities associated with any employee/employer relationship. Therefore, it is essential that you:

  • Establish a clear understanding of the hours and days to be worked along with a mutual understanding of your duties and responsibilities.
  • Notify your supervisor of any changes to your agreed hours of employment.
  • Provide your supervisor with hours worked on a weekly basis.
  • Notify the Student Financial Services Office if you withdraw from the program, in order to make your remaining funds available to other students.
