International Work Experience Program

Fall/Winter IWE

Applications for 2024-25 will be accepted from August 23rd - September 23rd, 2024

Purpose and Scope

The International Work Experience (I.W.E.) Program offers an opportunity for International students to work part-time on campus in jobs that accommodate their studies. The objectives of the I.W. E. Program are: to offer students training and experience that will assist them in further studies and their eventual entrance into the workforce, to provide an opportunity to contribute to the well-being and success of King’s as well as to provide some source of earnings for International Students.

Students can work up to 15 hours per week, to a maximum of $2,800.00. The current hourly rate of pay is $16.55.

Eligibility

To be considered for the I.W.E. Program students must meet the following eligibility criteria.

Must be an International Student (i.e. does not possess Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Resident or Immigration Residency Status in Canada).
Must be registered as a full-time undergraduate student at King's, in a minimum of 3.50 courses during the Fall/Winter term and be paying tuition to King's.
Must be available to work in Canada from October to March inclusive.
Must have achieved a minimum average of 60% in the previous academic year (if applicable).

Meeting the eligibility requirements is not a guarantee of employment. Students approved to participate in the program will be competing with other students to receive an offer of employment from one of the positions listed.

Applications for the Winter/Fall IWE Program will be accepted from August 23 - September 23 by Student Financial Services.
The application and job list will be available online here.

Complete the application

Submit the application online on or before 3:30 pm on Monday, September 23.
Supervisors will contact those students that they wish to interview. (please allow 3-4 weeks)
Please keep in mind that there are limited positions and there are no guarantees that you will be hired.

Hiring Process

Start Work

If hired, your supervisor will complete an online contract with you. Submit the contract electronically along with your tax forms and provide your Social Insurance Number and banking information for payroll direct deposit. This should be done before you begin working.

You will receive instructions on how to submit timesheets for the hours worked by the Payroll Office at King's.

Summer IWE Program

The application for Summer 2024 is now closed.

The application for Summer 2025 will open February 14th, 2025.

Purpose and Scope

The Summer International Work Experience Program (IWE) was designed for students who remain in Canada during the Summer months. The objectives of the IWE Program are: To offer students training and experience in a Canadian work environment, to provide a source of income during the summer months, and to prepare students for their eventual entrance into the work force. Students are paid $16.55 an hour (which includes 4% vacation pay), up to a maximum of 182 hours. Student(s), if hired, and their supervisor will select from one of the following contract options;

May 1st - August 31st, student can work up to 15 hours a week to a maximum of 182 hours.
May 1st - June 30th, student can work up to 30 hours a week to a maximum of 182 hours.
July 1st - August 31st, student can work up to 30 hours a week to a maximum of 182 hours.

Eligibility

To be considered for the IWE Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria.

Must be an International Student (i.e. does not possess Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Resident or Immigration Residency Status in Canada).
Must have been registered as a full time undergraduate student at King's University College (minimum 60% course load or 40% course load for students with disabilities) in the previous September to April study period and paid tuition to King's.
Must be available for work in Canada during the summer, for at least 2 months.
Must have achieved a minimum average of 60% in the previous academic year.
Must be a returning full time undergraduate student at King's, who has completed an Intent to Register for the upcoming Fall/Winter term.

How to Apply

Submit a resume and cover letter to Student Financial Services for EACH of the jobs you wish to be considered for.
Job lists available here once program opens.
Applications will be reviewed after the application deadline has passed.
Supervisors will contact those students they wish to interview (please allow 4 -5 weeks from application deadline). Contract start and end dates, along with weekly hours, to be discussed with supervisor when hired.
Applications will not be accepted after 11:59pm on Friday, March 15th, 2024. Please apply early to ensure you don't run into any technical issues at the last minute, when support staff is unavailable to provide assistance.

Hiring Process

If hired, your supervisor will complete a contract with you. The completed contract needs to be submitted to Student Financial Services for processing.
The first day students are able to begin working is May 1.

Policy Information

Students working under the I.W.E. Program are classified as part-time employees of King’s University College and will receive a T-4 slip. These positions carry with them all the responsibilities associated with any employee/employer relationship. Therefore, it is essential that you:

Establish a clear understanding of the hours and days to be worked along with a mutual understanding of your duties and responsibilities.
Notify your supervisor of any changes to your agreed hours of employment.
Provide your supervisor with hours worked on a weekly basis.
Notify the Student Financial Services Office if you withdraw from the program, in order to make the remaining funding available to other qualified students.
