All King’s students can participate in intramural sports at King’s and at Western. Nearly 12,000 students participate in Western’s intramural sports program.
Intramurals @ Western
Taking part in Intramural Sports is a great way to get involved in University life at Western. Whether you like to participate at the super, competitive, or recreational level, we offer a full range of activities that will pique your interest. Participants can enjoy a fun, equitable, and safe playing environment! Meet new people, enjoy friendly competition, and learn new skills in our facilities around campus. And, who doesn’t want to challenge for the right to don “The Purple Shirt”, an Intramural Champion tradition!
DIVISIONS
Women’s, Men’s and Co-ed leagues exist for the majority of the Sport Leagues over various time blocks throughout the week. Co-ed teams have minimum female and male participation and roster requirements. Open leagues are available for select leagues and have no minimum requirement for either gender and residence leagues are available for select leagues (go to this link for more information on residence leagues).
Participants can play on one gender specific team (men's or women's), one co-ed team and one open team (if offered) per sport, per season regardless of competition level.
LEVEL OF PLAY
- Rec. – designed with emphasis on fun, participation, fitness, and socializing
- Comp. – designed for those seeking a more competitive experience
- Super Comp. – designed for those seeking a more highly skilled and competitive experience

Badminton
Badminton is one of the more popular sports on campus. Between drop in and our badminton club there are hundreds of students taking part in this fun game. So come join us for one of the fastest growing sports on campus! Leagues are offered in the fall and winter.
Ball Hockey
Intramural Sports offers ball hockey leagues in both the fall and winter semesters. Fall is offered outdoors in the 'O-Rink' and indoors in the Rec Center and the winter leagues are offered indoors in the Rec Centre.
Basketball
Intramural Sports offers basketball players a wide selection of leagues to choose from. Basketball leagues are offered in the fall, winter and summer semesters.
Dodgeball
Dodge Ball is an incredibly popular and fun way to bond as a team, meet new people, and get in some deserved stress relief! Dodge ball leagues are offered in the fall and winter semesters.
European Handball
This co-ed sport of 6 on 6 introduces the skill and fun of soccer, mixed with basketball, mixed with... well, you'll just need to try it out! Intramural Sports offers European handball leagues in both the fall and winter semesters.
Flag Football
Intramural Sports offers three seasons of flag football during the fall, winter and summer semesters. Flag allows for a faster more dynamic air attack game.
Flag Rugby 7’s
NEW THIS YEAR!! Intramural Flag Rugby 7’s is a non-contact, fun, safe, team game that develops a range of ball handling, running and evasion skills. Whether you’re a former player, long-time supporter or new to the game, you too, can be a part of INTRAMURAL FLAG RUGBY 7’s! All you have to do is PICK UP THE BALLAND RUN WITH IT!
Futsal
Futsal is a skilful variation of indoor soccer, but played within the lines as opposed to against the walls. Futsal leagues are offered in the fall and winter semesters.
Ice Hockey
Intramural Sports offers ice hockey leagues in the fall that continue through the winter term, with a full season consisting of 12 regular season games plus playoffs. A general guideline of the ice hockey divisions and levels that’s right for you and your team can be found here.
Inner-tube Water Polo
Inner-tube Water Polo is played in the wonderful Western Student Recreation Centre 50 metre pool. One of the most popular, fun, and surprisingly challenging sports leagues. Intramural Sports offers inner-tube water polo leagues in both the fall and winter semesters.
Quidditch
Quidditch is an Intramural sport based on the fictional sport developed by J. K. Rowling in the Harry Potter series of Children’s novels. The game consists of 2 teams of: 3 chasers, 2 beaters, 1 keeper, 1 seeker and 1 neutral snitch runner affiliated with neither team. DOES YOUR BROOMSTICK HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?
Slo-Pitch
Intramural Slo-Pitch is a summer and fall semester tradition at Western. People of all skill levels fall in love with this game and the dynamic mixture of experience and enthusiasm creates an exhilarating atmosphere on the field. For a purely relaxing and recreational experience please check out our 3-pitch option.
3-Pitch
Intramural 3-pitch is a summer and fall semester tradition at Western. People of all skill levels fall in love with this game and the dynamic mixture of experience and enthusiasm creates an exhilarating atmosphere on the field. For a more competitive game please check out our slo-pitch options.
Soccer
Many divisions and opportunities for one of Western Intramural Sports most popular fall and summer leagues.
7 on 7 Soccer
Be a part of Western’s 7-on-7 Soccer league! Smaller field and goals, fast paced and high scoring! Intramural Sports offers 7 on 7 soccer leagues in the fall, winter and summer semesters.
Ultimate Frisbee
Intramural Sports offers ultimate frisbee leagues in both the summer and fall semesters. Ultimate is a great team game involving disc skills and fitness and sportsmanship play is encouraged at all times as there are no officials. Co-ed ultimate is played with 7 players on the field 3 of which must be female. Whether you are new to the sport or an experienced player the IMS ultimate league is sure to catch your fancy.
Volleyball
Intramural Sports offers volleyball players a wide selection of leagues to choose from. Leagues are offered in the fall and winter semesters. Volleyball is a great team sport and regardless of your skill or experience intramural sports has a league for you.
