Treye Trotman has built an impressive career as a student-athlete at King's. A Mustangs wrestler, he has won consecutive top titles at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championships and gold medals at the U SPORTS national championships, and he has maintained an undefeated record over the past two years. He is the #1 ranked wrestler in U Sports, Mustangs Male Athlete of the Year, and the 2023-24 Most Valuable Player across varsity athletics at Western.

Trotman approaches each match with humility and focus, understanding that every competition is a new challenge. "To me, one competition has no effect on another," he says. "I try to imagine that there is nothing to win or lose."

This mindset has been pivotal in Trotman's success, most recently earning him the title of Most Valuable Player across all varsity athletics at Western. As a BMOS student (Honours Specialization in Finance and Administration) going into his third year at King's this fall, Trotman's dedication to both academics and athletics is evident. "With the right mindset, you can do anything," he asserts.

Born in London, Ontario, Trotman's athletic journey began under the guidance of his father, who introduced him to martial arts, boxing, and jiu-jitsu. These disciplines taught him crucial skills such as trust and respect. "It was always my choice to pursue athletics. My dad provided guidance and was my best role model. Without him, I wouldn't have these goals or opportunities."

Trotman's passion for wrestling ignited in high school, where he had the opportunity to practice with the Mustangs. "Wrestling may seem like a solitary sport, but it's the camaraderie and supportive atmosphere that I love most." His technical and tactical skills and his positive personality have made him an invaluable asset to the team.

According to Trotman, the supportive atmosphere extends into the King's community and is vital to his success. "The smaller class sizes and campus make it easier to get to know students, faculty and staff, and we all support each other."

Between wrestling, school and working a part-time job, Treye has little leisure time. But rather than feeling overwhelmed, wrestling provides a therapeutic outlet for him to clear his head. "Wrestling is an escape for me. It gives me focus and allows me to do my best in all aspects of life."
