The Material Edges of Multispecies Justice

Join us for an enlightening panel discussion featuring Dr. Christine Winter (Ngāti Kahungunu ki te Wairoa, Pākehā), Senior Lecturer in Politics at the University of Otago and Research Affiliate at the Sydney Environment Institute. Dr. Winter's work on Multispecies Justice (MSJ) and intergenerational justice, drawing on Māori indigenous philosophy, has gained international attention. She is the author of Subjects of Intergenerational Justice: Indigenous Philosophy, the Environment and Relationships (Routledge 2022), as well as numerous academic articles.
This event is open to the entire King’s community—students, faculty, staff, and local community members—and requires no prior knowledge of the topic. Dr. Winter will introduce attendees to the emerging field of Multispecies Justice, a vital area of study that intersects with contemporary issues like Indigenous/settler reconciliation, climate justice, and ethical planetary transition.
Participants will be introduced to new ways of thinking about their relations with the world around them, including nonhuman beings. They will also gain greater insight into intergenerational ethics and be more aware about differences between Western and Indigenous (specifically Maori) ways of thinking about law and responsibility.
This panel is a unique opportunity to engage with an international scholar whose work bridges indigenous philosophy and legal thought, offering compelling arguments for deep societal transformation. The event also marks an exciting collaboration between the Centre for Social Concern (CSC) and the Centre for Philosophy and Culture (CPC) at King’s, blending interdisciplinary expertise to address some of today’s most pressing environmental and social issues.
Don't miss this thought-provoking conversation that will inspire new ways of thinking about our responsibility to both the planet and its inhabitants.
