Research Seminar Series - Nik Virtue

Dr. Nicolas Virtue, Assistant Professor of History, will be speaking on the topic of "Serving Our Fatherland with Pen: Italian Soldiers as Propagandists in Mussolini's War." This seminar will be offered in a hybrid attendance with lunch provided for those attending in person.

This presentation will explore a unique set of sources that were discovered serendipitously in the US National Archives: hundreds of letters, poems, short stories, and drawings submitted by ordinary Italian soldiers for publication in an army newspaper during the Second World War. Focusing on the research process itself, the presentation will address the opportunities as well as the challenges faced by historians when interpreting these unusual but problematic sources.

Lunch will be provided for those attending in person
