International Women's Day Talks

In celebration of International Women's Day (IWD), the Office of EDID hosts three short, powerful talks. Three speakers of varying backgrounds will come to the stage and speak for 15 minutes. There will be time for a Q&A after each talk. Donations are being accepted for the King's Cupboard. There will be a bin to donate non-perishable food items and/or feminine hygiene products

You can also register to attend by Zoom.

Guest speakers:

Dr. Jane Sanders - from the School of Social Work

Dr. Jane Sanders is an assistant professor in the School of Social Work at King's University College at Western Canada. She has over 25 years of clinical social work experience with children, youth, and families. Her current research focuses on the impact of trauma and expanded forms of adversity (including systemic racism, inequity, and community violence) on academics, with a particular focus on disciplinary school exclusion.

Dr. Jane Sanders will speak about the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on women and the ways that women carry the burden of child and family mental health while resources are dwindling.

Valentina Virviescas - KUCSC Chief Communications Officer

Valentina is currently the VP of Esports at Western Esports and Gaming Association (WEGA). This women-only gaming club creates a safer space for women to play online in a male-dominated industry. Valentina will be discussing the club and how she founded the first ever marginalized gender Esports team (women and non-binary).

Lyla Bruyere - Indigenous Elder and Residential School Survivor

Lyla will talk about surviving the residential school system.

The IWD 2024 campaign theme is Inspire Inclusion. We hope to empower all women by sharing these stories.
