Dr. Rebecca Carter-Chand on American religious responses to the rise of nazism
American Religious Responses to the Rise of Nazism
How did American Christian and Jewish leaders interpret and respond to news about Nazi Germany as it unfolded in the 1930s and 40s? This talk will explore a range of religious responses to the rise of fascism, antisemitism, concerns about religious freedom, the refugee crisis, and World War II. Building upon a current exhibition at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Americans and the Holocaust, Dr. Carter-Chand will discuss how information was disseminated through media and first-hand accounts and how religious leaders interpreted events in Europe through the lens of their faith and their understanding of American society.
