The London Youth Advisory Council (LYAC) is accepting student applications to run for the Western University Councillor position. Applications will be due on Friday, January 18, 2019 by 4:00 p.m. Students can apply at https://lyac.ca/join-council/. This position is a great opportunity for students who are passionate about their community and want to learn more about the city of London. The LYAC website states no previous political knowledge is necessary and all training is provided. To apply, students need to be between the ages of 15-25 and be a current student of Western or an affiliate. The position of Western University councillor is a one-year term.
The Western University Councillor will participate at weekly meetings on issues like transit and education in London. In between meetings, LYAC councillors actively participate in the community through interviews with community leaders and leading community development projects. They also explore projects that interest them, such as advocating for change in marginalized communities in London. Students get to experience how decisions are made in politics and be a voice for students in their community.
In the past, King’s students have been Ward councilors for the LYAC, such as Olivia Smith Rodrigues, who is currently studying a double major in Social Justice and Peace Studies and Political Science in her fourth year at King’s, and Violette Khammad, who was KUCSC president for the 2017-2018 school year.
