Make an impact on future students
July 30, 2019
For Danielle Bushey, Fourth-Year Double Major in Social Justice and Peace Studies and Political Science, a tour of King’s changed her life. “I decided to come to King's because of my personal experience with a Tour Guide at an Open House. One student sold me on the opportunities available, particularly in the program I was entering, which completely changed my mind on which university I would attend for the next four years,” says Bushey.
King’s students now have the opportunity to make a significant difference in a prospective student’s life by applying to become a King’s Tour Guide from September 2019 to May 2020. Applications open on July 29, 2019. Tour Guides will lead tours of King’s campus and residences to prospective students and their families, visiting dignitaries and international groups, alumni, and high school groups.
Bushey explains she enjoyed the flexibility of being able to work as a tour guide around her academic schedule. She says the opportunity to have a job where she gets to talk to prospective students about what King’s offers is “a win-win. The best part about being a tour guide is being to showcase our favourite aspects of King's and really speak about our personal experiences as King's students,” says Bushey.
Often a tour guide is the first contact a future student will have at King’s. “Essentially, a tour guide acts as an ambassador for the campus and I appreciate the value this role holds. To have the ability to showcase King’s to prospective students, as well as their families or friends, was an opportunity which heavily interested me,” says Julian Black, Fourth-Year Double Major in History and Sociology.
Trey Humes, Fourth-Year Specialization in Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources (BMOS) and a minor in French, says hearing tour guides speak, as current students themselves, about their King’s experience resonates with prospective students. “A lot of times students are on the fence about where they would like to go to university, but after going on a tour at King’s they realize this is where they want to be. A campus tour can be a deciding factor for many students, and as a tour guide, you may truly impact their university decision, which is exactly what makes being a tour guide so great.”
Rasmyah Mohammad, Fourth-Year Honours Specialization in Psychology, was looking for an opportunity to step into a leadership role. Mohammad also “wanted to share with them all the information that they needed while relating my own experiences to fully illustrate how amazing King's is. I have met with various parents, students, recruiters and more. They are all so interesting and have a lot of great stories to share,” Mohammad says.
Often, the tour guides themselves learn things that can aide their studies. In many cases, the experience has provided knowledge on resources available to King’s students. “For example, I learned about the research assistant at the library who is very helpful when it comes to finding sources for academic papers,” says Mohammad.
