Excellence in Teaching Award winner presents Christopher Perrin Beatty Lecture
November 21, 2024
As part of our Feast of Christ the King celebration, King’s honoured excellence in teaching on November 20, 2024, in the Spriet Learning Commons.
As the recipient of this year’s King’s Award of Excellence in Teaching for full-time faculty, Dr. Lynda Hutchinson ’01, Program Coordinator/Associate Professor of Psychology, presented this year’s Christopher Perrin Beatty Lecture.
Dr. Hutchinson presented on “Fostering Self-Regulated Learning in the 21st Century Classroom: Stories and Strategies from An Educational Psychologist.” It was a very dynamic, engaging presentation that demonstrated why she was so deserving of this award in the first place
"Self-regulated learning is a way of preparing students for the future; it’s for all learners. Opportunities for self-regulated learning are everywhere," she explained.
In this lecture, Dr. Hutchinson shared her teaching insights and how self-regulated learning can be nurtured in students of all ages. She described real-life observations detailing how teachers support self-regulated learning in their classrooms before closing the lecture by inviting guests to consider how their teachers have fostered self-regulated learning strategies. More than 40 years of research shows that self-regulation - a person's application of emotional, cognitive, motivational, and behavioural strategies to achieve goals - is associated with success in school and in life.
The Christopher Perrin Beatty Lecture was established by the Beatty family to honour the memory of their son Christopher '07, who passed away in 2008 at the age of 23.
Trevor Medeiros ’15, Lecturer in the School of Management, Economics, and Mathematics (MEM), the recipient of the recipient of the King’s Award of Excellence in Teaching for part-time faculty, was unable to attend the event.
