Taking Care of Yourself
-- By Zambaga Zorigtbaatar, EDID Work Study Student
Mental health, which includes psychological and emotional well-being, plays an important role in leading a fulfilling life and can significantly impact your overall health. Maintaining a positive mindset has a deep impact on thoughts, emotions, and actions, empowering individuals to navigate life's challenges. Mental well-being is closely linked to the social context, influenced by various factors such as family dynamics, loss, financial status, and professional life. Moreover, strong connections with friends, family, and colleagues also play a crucial role. Taking care of your mental health requires time and effort. It is advised to begin by admitting that life can be difficult and identifying your advantages and disadvantages. Establish reasonable objectives, and recognize that both positive and negative feelings, are a normal part of life for both you and other people. Create a hobby or take up a new activity to give meaning to your daily activities.
As per the School of Mental Health Ontario, approximately 1.2 million children and youth are affected by their mental health, with 18-22 percent of students in Ontario meeting the criteria for a mental health concern. In Canada, 17- 40 percent of children and youth will seek formal mental health services.
To maintain good mental health, students should prioritize self-care by getting enough sleep, maintaining a balanced diet, and engaging in regular physical activity. It is essential to normalize the idea of seeking professional support when facing challenges, encouraging students to engage with counselors, therapists, or other mental health professionals. Additionally, emphasizing the importance of consistent daily routines can provide structure and stability, contributing significantly to overall well-being.

SAD Lamp
King's Library recognizes the significance of mental well-being and has implemented measures to support students, including those affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a form of depression that typically occurs during specific seasons, most commonly in the fall and winter months when there is less natural sunlight. Light therapy has been recognized as an effective treatment for SAD, and recent mental health news highlights its significance in managing this condition.
Studies have demonstrated the positive impact of light therapy on individuals with SAD. The therapy involves exposure to a bright light that mimics natural sunlight, helping regulate rhythms and improve mood. The library has a light therapy lamp, a power adapter, and an instruction guide. It has the potential to enhance the overall well-being of those affected by SAD, offering a convenient and effective solution for managing symptoms.
Please don't wait, and reach out if you need extra support.
