International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day to celebrate and recognize the achievements of women. It also recognizes the ongoing fight for gender equality and women’s rights. The first IWD was held on March 19, 1911 and was officially recognized by the United Nations in 1977. It emerged from the activities of labour movements in North America and Europe at the turn of the twentieth century. Here are some interesting facts about IWD:

  • The official colours of IWD are purple, green, and white. Purple represents justice and dignity, and being loyal to the cause. Green represents hope, and white symbolizes purity. The colours originated from the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) in the UK in 1908.
  • The 2024 IWD campaign theme is Inspire Inclusion. This means celebrating diversity and empowerment in all areas of society.
  • IWD takes place on March 8 every year. The date was chosen because of the Russian Revolution. On February 23, 1917 women in Russia protested for the right to vote. Four days later they were successful. At this time, Russia had not yet adopted the Gregorian calendar, which is used today in most countries. In 1917, February 23 in Russia corresponded with March 8 in other European countries.
  • IWD is celebrated in different ways around the world. In Italy, women are traditionally given flowers called mimosas. In the United States, there are often rallies, conferences, and other events that focus on women’s rights. In Russia, it is a national holiday and is recognized as gift-giving. In Chile, people take part in public demonstrations over social injustices.
