Research Process: Writing & Citing

Citation and Writing Style Guides

Citing Sources

Citing your sources is a final, crucial part of your research.  The documentation you provide at the end of your essay identifies the material you've used, gives credit to those authors whose research and work you have used to develop your own arguments, and provides information to the reader who wishes to retrieve that material.  With good documentation you will avoid plagiarism and preserve your academic integrity.

Your instructors may indicate which of the many citation styles they expect you to use.  If you're not sure, ask.

The Online Writing Lab (OWL) at Purdue University houses writing resources and instructional material, and we provide these as a free service of the Writing Lab at Purdue. Students, members of the community, and users worldwide will find information to assist with many writing projects. Teachers and trainers may use this material for in-class and out-of-class instruction.
